Growing up LGBT+ : The Impact of school, home and coronavirus on LGBT+ young people
Just like us has released its INDEPENDENT research report into the experiences of lgbt+ young people across the UK, ahead of its school diversity week this 21-25 june.
LGBT+ school pupils are twice as likely to be bullied, contemplate suicide and feel lonely on a daily basis, and 91% have heard negative language about being LGBT+ in the past year
Pupils whose schools have strong positive messaging about being LGBT+ are less likely to report having suicidal thoughts and feelings – regardless of whether they are LGBT+ or not
Half of pupils (48%) have had little to zero positive messaging about being LGBT+ at school in the last 12 months
89% of Black LGBT+ young people have experienced suicidal thoughts and feelings, compared to 67% of white LGBT+ young people
More than ever we’re starting to see reports and studies that provide insight into the lives of people within the LGBT+ community.
Just Like Us is a LGBT+ charity for young people, with a particular focus on tackling LGBT+ education and attitudes in the school and workplace. Independently conducted by Cibyl, Their latest research dissects the experiences of LGBT+ young people in school, at home and throughout the pandemic.
The report specifically highlights the even more disproportionate challenges that Black LGBT+ young people are facing, and details this under its own section.
Whilst we have come a long way, we are enraged that so many young LGBT+ people have experienced this. We will continue to push forward for our community, amplifying those black and brown voices who do not have the platforms to speak and fight for a better future for this generation and those to come.
