Check It is a film that follows the unbreakable bond between a group of vulnerable gay and transgender black youth faced with the challenge of breaking down gender and race stereotypes to stand up for who they are. In the run up to the first edition of AFROPUNK in London, the team have joined up with UK Black Pride to present the first ever UK screening of Check It on Thursday 22nd September at Ritzy Cinema Brixton, as well as a panel discussion about gender, race and sexuality, subjects explored in the film.
At first glance members of the Check It seem like unlikely gang members; some of the boys wear lipstick, mascara and stilettos – their handbags conceal weapons. As gay and transgender youth, they’ve been shot, stabbed, and raped. In the shadow of the White House in Washington D.C’s most deprived area this group of 9th graders decide to turn the tables. At its heart the film explores the indomitable resilience and friendship within the group as they take on the task of breaking the cycle of poverty and violence they live with.
