International Rights Officer
Chelvan is profiled in the UK’s legal directories as highly regarded and the go-to barrister for LGBT asylum cases. He is based at the No5 Barristers’ Chambers in London. In January 2016 he was elected onto Chambers’ Management Board and was appointed the Equality and Diversity Officer.
His (inter)national work representing refugees, and those who are claiming asylum on grounds sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, is recognised by national and international NGOs and inter-governmental organisations including the UN Human Rights Commission for Refugees, and the International Organisation for Migration. Various governments around the world are also applying Chelvan’s ‘Difference, Stigma, Shame, and Harm’ (DSSH) model which he created in 2011 as a tool to help determine LGBT+ asylum claims.
Chelvan has fully embraced UK Black Pride in order to help provide a safe space to fellow queer people of colour to celebrate our identities without the stigma or shame applied to us. His joining the UK Black Pride team reflects Chelvan’s passion for the right to celebrate our differences without judgement or justification.
