Award-winning UK Black Pride – Europe’s largest not-for-profit event for African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean-heritage lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people – is proud to announce that its tenth anniversary event will be Pride in the Park on Sunday 28 June in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. This is an integral part of London LGBT Community Pride celebrations. Join us!
The theme of UK Black Pride’s tenth anniversary festival is: Celebrating 10 Years of Ubuntu! (Including You!). Ubuntu is a Xhosa language word which originates from South Africa. It is as much a concept of a way of life as it is a word and describes the interdependence of humanity for it to prosper. UK Black Pride’s Board selected this theme to sum up ten years of struggle for acceptance and inclusion of all Black LGBT people on our own terms within the mainstream LGBT and Pride movement which has not always been able to meet the needs or accurately represent the interests of our diverse communities of Black LGBT activists and supporters.
To attend the tenth annual UK Black Pride festival, which is an integral part of Pride in the Park celebrations on Sunday 28 June in London Vauxhall’s Pleasure Gardens, simply come along from 12 noon until 9pm. The FREE event will feature a main stage where UK Black Pride will blend live music, politics and poetry to deliver an entertaining, family-friendly, and inclusive festival of community pride. With a disco stage, comedians, sports activities, education and welfare stalls, alongside world food and drink (don’t forget to bring along your own picnic), it is guaranteed that there will be something for all tastes at the event. Join us!
UK Black Pride maintains a strong identity as a grassroots movement. We believe the most effective way to secure the fight for LGBT equality and inclusion is by opposing all forms of bigotry and putting people and politics before profit. The Celebrating 10 Years of Ubuntu! (Including You!) theme signals our determination to stand for LGBT love and equality against all purveyors of division and hate wherever they are. Join us!
Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, UK Black Pride Executive Director, said:
We’re excited to share UK Black Pride’s message of Including You! to our community of Black LGBT members who hail from all corners of the world. We’ll inject our international flavour to the heart of the LGBT community during Pride in London week of celebrations. With our own brand of entertainment and community we’re making this tenth anniversary event one for everyone to enjoy. Join us!”
Michael Salter, Pride in London Board Chair, said:
When we were given responsibility to organise Pride in London we wanted to create an event that was accessible to all parts of the diverse LGBT+ community. One of the groups we were most keen to work with and support was UK Black Pride whose team of dedicated volunteers have created a really special event to support the BAME community. We’re especially delighted to be working with them in this, their tenth anniversary year.”
