For Immediate Release
- UK Black Pride music festival to be held on 26 June 2016 from 13:00 – 22:00

Award-winning UK Black Pride – Europe’s largest not-for-profit event for African, Asian, Arab and Caribbean-heritage lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people – has announced that its eleventh annual festival will take place on Sunday 26 June in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens as an integral feature of the Pride in London week of celebrations. Join us!
The UK Black Pride Board has also announced it has selected: Transforming Our Community as the theme of this year’s festival to give visibility to epidemic levels of violence, discrimination and poverty that continue to haunt and take the lives of transgender people in this country and across the globe. With statistics showing Black trans people, women in particular, more susceptible to homelessness, HIV infection, and forced sex work, it is clear that the battle for acceptance and inclusion of all Black LGBT people in mainstream society, the LGBT and Pride movement, is far from won. UK Black Pride believes that things have to change and that all sections of the community must work together to improve how transgender people gain rights.
Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, UK Black Pride Executive Director, said:
“We’re proud to promote UK Black Pride’s message of Transforming Our Community in solidarity with our Black trans members who hail from all corners of the world. Research shows trans people face harassment and discrimination and this increases exponentially when racism and sexism are also factors.
“LGBT people of colour already know how tough it is for our communities’ needs and ambitions to be understood or met. This is why UK Black Pride believes we must all take responsibility to better represent the interests of our diverse community of Black LGBT activists and supporters. Together we can change the mindset of those who are prejudiced against trans people by amplifying the fact that trans lives have value and importance equal to any other.”
“This year’s festival will see our community inject a global flavour to the heart of the LGBT community during Pride in London celebrations. We’ll make this an event for all to enjoy!”
To attend the eleventh UK Black Pride festival, in alliance with Pride in London celebrations, on Sunday 26 June in London’s Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, just come along between 1pm and 10pm. UK Black Pride maintains a strong identity as a grassroots-led movement.
